Just about everyone has probably seen an ikat fabric at some point in their life. Ikat fabric has known origins back to the pre-Columbian time period and was mainly produced in Central and South American Cultures.
Without getting to scientific about how this woven fabric is dyed just think back to your days of tie-dying. Remember how you would twist and tie the piece of fabric that you were dying? Well, the original manufacturing of ikat was very similar to our version of tie-dying. I imagine that the dye’s of ancient past were made of roots, berries, plants, etc.
In my most recent copy of Elle Decor there is a page dedicated to the new trend in Ikat fabric. lately I have seen ikat fabric samples come through the design studio where I work. What Elle showcases and I find to be fun is that ikat has been revived and being used for more things then just clothing. You can click on the plates above and be directed to another example of ikat and below are some sites you can check out.
